The department also awards teaching and research assistantships to a number of qualified graduate students. Monthly stipends for graduate assistantships are competitive with those offered by other state universities. Students with assistantships must be enrolled for 12 semester hours per semester. These positions can present valuable opportunities for learning beyond the curriculum.
A number of federal, corporate, and foundation grants are available to graduate students. The university also administers both long-term and short-term loans at low interest rates. In addition, there are a number of on-campus job opportunities for a student’s spouse. The Department of Accounting and Information Systems has several scholarships and fellowships available. These are awarded to students based on their academic records. The Supplemental Information of Departmental Placement, Assistantships and Fellowships is required for departmental scholarships and fellowships. Approximately 40% of the Master’s of Accounting and Information Systems students in the Pamplin College receive some form of financial aid.
Approximately 40 percent of the Master’s students and 100 percent of the Ph.D. students in our department receive some form of financial aid. A number of our Ph.D. students have received dissertation grants from such sources as the AICPA, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Virginia Tech Graduate School (Cunningham Fellowship), Ernst and Young, the Government Accounting Office, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and Richard D. Irwin.
Gifts from our successful and loyal alumni and their employers have helped establish over 60 endowed scholarships for ACIS majors. Each year, we award more than $200,000 in scholarships to qualified undergraduate and graduate students. Sophomores and Juniors who wish to be considered for an award must complete a Rising Junior and Senior Awards form. Seniors entering the ACIS Master’s Program must complete a Graduating Seniors Awards form. Forms will be emailed to you. Completed forms should be delivered to Pamplin 3007 during the month of February only. Please refer to the Awards form for the exact deadline. Award decisions will be announced at the awards banquet. All decisions are confidential until the awards ceremony.
