Konrad W. Kubin Retires

Konrad W. KubinKonrad W. Kubin joined the Virginia Tech faculty in September of 1972 after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Washington. Upon arriving in Blacksburg, Konrad developed a course in international accounting and he has taught this course during his 31-year tenure at Virginia Tech. Konrad has also taught financial accounting and auditing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Professor Kubin has specialized in international accounting and business and has authored or co-authored 14 journal articles, 8 refereed proceedings, 3 books, 3 monographs, 13 books chapters, 2 bibliographies, and 6 book reviews. Several of his publications have been translated into Chinese, French, German, or Spanish. He also has served as a consultant to the Office of International Cooperation and Development of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and as a technical reviewer to the U.S. Department of Education on international accounting and business. Konrad has taught over 30 different courses at Virginia Tech and has been a visiting professor at Northeastern University, Boston; the University of Wroclaw, Poland; and the universities of Aachen, AugsBurg, Marburg, Halle-Wittenberg, and Munster, all in Germany. He also has led six study abroad programs and has served on 15 dissertation committees.

As faculty advisor, Konrad contributed to the success of Beta Alpha Psi, Mortar Board, Graduate Accounting Society, and the Made-in-Germany Student Club. He and his wife Erna, have hosted over 75 visiting scholars. In additon, he has served as a Director of the Virginia Society of CPAs, Chair of the International Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, President of the Roanoke Area Chapter of the Virginia Society of CPAs, and others. He contributed to numerous committees on the national, state, and local levels, and at the university where he served, among others, as President of the Faculty Senate.

Upon the announcement of his retirement at the fall departmental faculty meeting, Konrad received a standing ovation from our faculty. Commenting on his retirement, Wayne Leininger said, "Konrad is a friend of our faculty and students. He also has been the consummate professional in all that he has accomplished. No task has been too small or large and his attention to detail has been an example to both faculty and students. Virginia Tech is a better place because of the dedicated service of Konrad Kubin. It has been my pleasure to have him as a colleague and friend." Konrad completes his service on June 30, 2003.
