Strategic Plan

The strategic plan is based on a faculty commitment to the following shared values:

For each operational area in the department a sub-mission statement and objectives have been developed:

Research Program: It is a mission of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems in the Pamplin College of Business to improve the accounting and information systems professions by conducting quality research and disseminating the results.

  • Full-time tenure-track faculty are involved in quality research programs that result in publication.
  • Faculty are involved in sponsored research.
  • Faculty assist doctoral students and Ph.D. graduates in starting and maintaining quality research programs and publications.
  • Facilitate the integration of faculty research findings into teaching.

Undergraduate Programs in Accounting and Information Systems: We seek to prepare students to enter accounting and information systems professions with the skills and knowledge of business, information systems and accounting concepts and practice.

  • Provide our students with knowledge of accounting and information systems at the conceptual and practical level.
  • Provide students with communication, analytical, and research skills required by accounting and information systems professionals.
  • Provide experiential learning opportunities where students can meet and interact with accounting and systems professionals.
  • Provide students with a global persepctive and study abroad opportunities related to accounting and information systems.
  • Provide students with an academic environment that fosters the desire for life-long learning.
  • Provide students with an opportunity for honors education.

Master of Accounting and Information Systems Program: We seek to prepare students for professional careers with specializations in assurance and financial services, taxation, and information systems.

  • Recruit undergraduate students from a diverse set of colleges and universities.
  • Enroll into all options a diverse body of students that meet the requisite criteria for successful completion of the Master's program.
  • Prepare students to effectively practice and provide services in their chosen field in current and future business environments.
  • Ensure the Master's program can be completed in a reasonable period of time.
  • Provide necessary advising to students concerning their academic program and career choices.

Ph.D. Program: We seek to prepare students for academic careers in research and teaching.

  • Admit a diverse group of students with the requisites consistent with the mission of the Ph.D. program in Accounting and Information Systems at Virginia Tech.
  • Produce graduates with the research skills that would make them attractive prospects to research schools.
  • Produce graduates with the teaching skills that would make them attractive prospects to schools.
  • Place graduates in research colleges and universities.

Service Program: It is a mission of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems in the Pamplin College of Business to deliver outreach services to accounting and information systems professionals and educators.

Alumni Relations Program: It is a mission of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems in the Pamplin College of Business to foster relations with alumni, employers, and friends.

External Fund Raising Program: It is a mission of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems in the Pamplin College of Business to increase financial support from alumni, friends, firms, and corporations in the form of annual unrestricted giving and endowment necessary to support strategic objectives of the department.
